Sports And Safety

Eye Protection Required Logo

Every year, it is estimated that 2.5 million Americans will suffer from an eye injury. These most commonly occur on the job, around the home, or during athletic activities. Sadly, eye trauma is a leading cause of blindness. The good news is that nearly 90% of these injuries are preventable, with proper protection.

At North Shore Eye Health and Wellness, we want to protect your gift of sight. We participate in local small business Eyewear Safety Programs and promote the use of safety eyewear for all of our athletes that come through the clinic. Have questions regarding safety eyewear? We are here to help!

Concussions...a Hot Button Topic

Tying in with eye safety...did you know that concussions (mild traumatic brain injury, mTBI) can result in significant visual consequences? As a matter of fact, visual symptoms are one of the best ways for your doctor to diagnose a concussion and to be able to determine when it is safe to return to the field of play.

The signs and symptoms of a concussion can be subtle and may not be immediately apparent. Symptoms can last for days, weeks or even longer. Common visual symptoms of a concussion include:

  • light sensitivity (photophobia)

  • blurry vision

  • eyestrain/fatigue

  • double vision

  • motion hypersensitivity or vertigo

  • delayed visual processing -- slow reaction times, learning delays

Together, these symptoms have been termed Post Concussion Vision Syndrome. If you or your child has recently suffered a head injury and is experiencing any of these symptoms, call North Shore Eye Health and Wellness today...we can help! Below are some quick links for reference and a great guide for visual recovery following concussions. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!
